Growing up, my dad’s side of the family would gather multiple times each summer at my aunt’s house on Long Pond in Lakeville, MA. Some of my favorite childhood memories happened there: hanging out in the yard, swimming in the lake, and relaxing in this hammock. The hammock itself has been in that yard for as long as I can remember, always framed by the bright orange daylilies and a sailboat docked in the distance, it always felt so familiar and calming.
My aunt passed away in 2017, and I painted this scene as a memorial to the time we spent together. I created two copies: one now hangs at my parents’ house, and one is lovingly displayed at the lake house, where it belongs.
Last year, a storm knocked down one of the trees that supported the hammock, and it no longer hangs as it once did. Losing that tree gave this painting even more meaning. It became not just a memory of summers past, but also a reflection on how quickly time moves and how things change.
